The 49ers were likely to add rookie Jeff Driskel to the practice squad if he cleared waivers. Somewhat surprisingly, Driskel was claimed by the Cincinnati Bengals. The bottom line is if the 49ers were sold on Driskel as a possible future starter, they never would have taken the gamble of exposing him to waivers. Coach Chip Kelly said he has always kept three quarterbacks on his 53-man roster because of the risks of the position. The 49ers have confidence that Ponder, with 36 career starts, can step in and play.
