49ers pool of candidates shrinks as Rams tab next head coach

Former Washington offensive coordinator Sean McVay became the youngest head coach in modern NFL history on Thursday.

McVay, 30, was hired as the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, the team announced, leaving the 49ers as one of just two teams with a head-coaching vacancy.

McVay is the grandson of longtime 49ers executive John McVay, an inductee into the organization’s Hall of Fame. The 49ers interviewed McVay on Monday.

The new Los Angeles Chargers, who announced their move from San Diego early Thursday, are the only other NFL team without a head coach.

The 49ers are concurrently conducting a general manager search, along with pursuing a head coach.
