The three basic run game schemes employed in football include the gap (power, counter trey), man (iso, lead draw, counter) and zone (inside zone, outside zone, zone read).
Gap-scheme runs seek to create or move gaps along the offensive line at the point of attack. Man scheme runs have the blockers going “man to man” with an assigned defender and creating one point of attack. Zone-scheme runs have blockers blocking an area, or “zone,” in the same direction as the play, sometimes with double teams at the point of attack.
Today’s play utilizes both gap- and zone-blocking concepts.
