SANTA CLARA — Training camp is off to an encouraging start for the 49ers with no major injuries, no contract squabbles and no sign that Jimmy Garoppolo will ever lose a game in his blissful career. No practice on Monday means it’s time to answer fans’ pressing questions:
Warner is impressive, and he’s notably doing so while projected starting linebacker Malcolm Smith remains out with a pre-camp leg injury. Warner’s intelligence stoked praise from defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. His instincts, speed and range are obvious. He acquitted himself well while debuting in pads. But we need to see more, especially in exhibitions, to better peg his rookie potential as Smith’s successor, and he’d still have to leapfrog Brock Coyle, who’s having a great camp.
