49ers lose safety Eric Reid for season

SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers will play their final six games without safety Eric Reid, who tore his right biceps tendon as the Patriots tried to run out the clock late in Sunday’s game. Reid will have surgery and will be placed on injured reserve.

Reid, 24, was hurt while trying to tackle 250-pound running back LeGarrette Blount. The 49ers were down 13 points at the time and there was less than two minutes to play. Ask why he continued to call timeouts -- and thus prevent the Patriots from kneeling and running out the clock -- Chip Kelly said he was trying to keep the 49ers in the game.
