SANTA CLARA — One name now out of the 49ers quarterback mix is Thad Lewis, a journeyman backup who learned Monday he's sustained a season-ending knee injury.
Lewis tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the third quarter of Sunday's 24-13, exhibition-opening loss to the Houston Texans."He actually didn't think he was hurt that bad," said Kelly, noting that an MRI on Monday revealed the ACL tear. The 49ers have another injured quarterback to worry about in Colin Kaepernick, whose shoulder tightness kept him out of Sunday's exhibition. He hasn't practiced since last Wednesday.Kelly is hoping Kaepernick can return for this week's workload against the Denver Broncos, who will host the 49ers in practices Wednesday and Thursday ahead of Saturday night's exhibition.
