As part of a diversified intern program Bill Walsh launched nearly 40 years ago, Katie Sowers will serve this summer as the 49ers first female assistant coach.
Sowers served a similar internship last summer with the Atlanta Falcons wide receivers and then spent nine months as a scouting intern with the franchise. Now she’ll reunite with Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers first-year coach who previously was the Falcons offensive coordinator.
The Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship officially got launched in the 1980s to expose minority coaches to NFL methods and philosophies in training camps.
Two years ago, the 49ers hired Laura Schnettgoecke as the first female assistant on their training staff.
