49ers injury updates: Christian McCaffrey will miss the preseason with a calf strain

The San Francisco 49ers returned to practice Tuesday, and head coach Kyle Shanahan provided a handful of injury updates.

Punter Mitch Wishnowsky is dealing with knee irritation, which has caused him to miss the past few days of practice. The 49ers will have to add a punter for their preseason opener Saturday against the Tennessee Titans. Shanahan said, “We’ll have to figure something out for the game.” Kyle Juszczyk continues to be the holder for Jake Moody while Wishnowsky is out.

Speaking of, don’t expect to see many starters. Shanahan said a few starters will have to play by necessity, but don’t expect to see them for more than a series or two.
