49ers have new role for Carradine to inject life into pass rush

SANTA CLARA – The 49ers’ defense ranks 25th in the NFL in sacks per pass play, so they might turn to their second-round pick from 2013 to do something about that.

Coach Jim Tomsula on Wednesday unveiled a plan to get defensive lineman Tank Carradine more involved in the team’s nickel defense as an edge rusher. Carradine, who has rushed the passer from a defensive tackle spot in the past, would move to defensive end in those situations.

“Looking to get him playing on edges more – some outside edge, whether you want to call it D-end, where he plays out on the edge, where he’s rushing and playing the game from the outside,” Tomsula said.
