“BRETT MAHER LACES OUT,” a sign right behind the goal posts read, with a photo of the fictional Dolphins kicker from “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.”
In the 1994 Jim Carrey movie, the kicker missed a chip shot in the Super Bowl and blamed (the real) Dan Marino for a poor hold, failing to properly position the laces. The movie is so anti-gay and transphobic that even Joe Rogan recently called it “insanely transphobic,” and with good reason. The plot hinges on Carrey’s character discovering that a detective named Lois Einhorn is a transgender woman and had previously been the Miami kicker; when he deduces this, he panics and begins throwing up because he kissed a trans woman.
