SANTA CLARA — Elvis Dumervil, the 49ers leader in sacks last season at age 33, won’t be making an encore.
The 49ers opted not to retain Dumervil at a $2.75 million base salary for the second year of his contract, and the move overall saves the 49ers $3.5 million in salary cap space, according to overthecap.com.
A situational pass-rusher who played just 30 percent of the defensive snaps, Dumervil’s 6.5 sacks last season were more than double any other 49ers pass rusher. DeForest Buckner and Solomon Thomas, the 49ers top picks the previous two drafts, each had three sacks.
