49ers claim DT Xavier Cooper to address depth issues

A day after releasing Quinton Dial, placing Chris Jones on injured reserve, and acknowledging Ronald Blair won’t be ready for the start of the season, the 49ers addressed their interior defensive line depth by claiming Xavier Cooper off waivers from the Browns, a source said.

Cooper, 25, was a 2015 third-round pick of the Browns, who waived him Saturday. He will likely fill the spot of Blair, who made the initial 53-man roster but is expected to be placed on short-term injured reserve with a thumb injury.

Cooper, 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds, has played in 27 games (two starts) and has 22 tackles and 1.
