SANTA CLARA — Matt Breida’s ankle injury forced him Thursday to miss his first 49ers practice this season, casting further doubt on the running back’s availability for Monday night’s game at Green Bay.
Coach Kyle Shanahan would not rule out Breida, however, and is “still keeping fingers crossed” their leading rusher can play.
Otherwise, Alfred Morris, who’s platooned with Breida all season, would be in line to start against the Packers and see an increased workload.
The 49ers’ injury issues go far beyond Breida, and beyond his predecessor Jerick McKinnon and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Also missing Thursday’s practice: wide receivers Pierre Garcon (shoulder, knee), Trent Taylor (back) and Dante Pettis (knee); tight end George Kittle (knee); and offensive linemen Joe Staley (knee), Weston Richburg (knee) and Mike Person (knee)
Raheem Morris, a special teams ace, is the only other running back on the roster, and if Breida can’t suit up, the 49ers likely will call up either Jeff Wilson or Matt Dayes from the practice squad.
