The San Francisco 49ers poured over $2 million into four races for seats on the Santa Clara City Council. After four weeks of tabulation, three of the 49ers-backed candidates have emerged victorious.
The 49ers have poured millions of dollars into their home city’s council races on a biannual basis over the past three election cycles and beyond. Bay Area News Group reported the team’s political spending just in Santa Clara is now over $15 million since 2009. The spending increased dramatically in 2020, after the City Council voted unanimously to remove the team as manager of Levi’s Stadium.
