A year ago, Arik Armstead’s $9 million salary seemed like a gamble, until his career-best season unfolded for the eventual NFC champion 49ers.
Now comes a bigger investment. Armstead, the 49ers’ 2015 first-round draft pick, agreed Monday on a five-year contract worth up to $85 million, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, that kept him from leaving via NFL free agency that began Monday.

The 49ers opted for that commitment rather than a franchise tag and its accompanying price tag of approximately $17.8 million. With his new deal, Armstead will earn an average of $17 million per season.
