49ers’ Anthony Davis retires for second time in 15 months

SANTA CLARA -- Offensive tackle Anthony Davis, who contemplated retirement before the 49ers’ season opener this month, informed the team today that he no longer wants to play.

Davis, 26, retired abruptly last year and sat out the 2015 season for health reasons. He returned for training camp seemingly reinvigorated and ready to resume his career. But he had second thoughts on the eve of the 49ers' first game against the Rams and then, according to the team, suffered a concussion in practice a few days later. Reporters did not witness the concussion because the full sessions are not open to the media

Davis hadn't practiced or been in uniform since then.
