The San Francisco 49ers were left needing help at quarterback after Thad Lewis went down with a torn ACL in Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans. The 49ers were unaware of the severity of Lewis’ injury until Monday morning — he was only limping slightly on Sunday.
With Lewis out for the season, however, the 49ers needed to pick up another quarterback at least for the preseason. With Colin Kaepernick still nursing arm fatigue and his availability essentially day-to-day, the 49ers needed more QBs taking reps than just Blaine Gabbert and Jeff Driskel.
