When the 49ers fired Steve Wilks as their defensive coordinator after their crushing Super Bowl loss, the fan base’s pie-in-the-sky, never-going-to-happen wish for a replacement was Bill Belichick.
Apparently, head coach Kyle Shanahan also had that wish.
Shanahan told Tim Kawakami on the “TK Show” podcast in an episode published Tuesday that he did, in fact, make an open-ended offer to Belichick to join the 49ers this offseason — as defensive coordinator, or anything else.
“I did. I threw it out to him,” Shanahan said. “He loves football so much that you never know what he [would say].
