The San Francisco 49ers haven’t been shy about trying to make roster upgrades when possible.
A good example of this was when the team inked former center Daniel Kilgore to an extension after the 2017, then signed free-agent center Weston Richburg in 2018 and traded off Kilgore to the Miami Dolphins.
That move was likely unexpected. Kilgore hadn’t put himself in a position to play himself off the roster.
But it illustrates a point: San Francisco won’t commit to a player just because he’s having or coming off a good year. If the team can upgrade, it will.
