In the 2018 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers turned some heads by grabbing Notre Dame offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey at No. 9 overall.
The move was a bit of a shocker. After all, the Niners already had an established right tackle in Trent Brown, and many a mock draft pointed to San Francisco grabbing either linebacker Roquan Smith or safety Derwin James instead.
The 49ers’ selection made a bit more sense a day later when the team moved Brown to the New England Patriots via a trade. And by doing so, the Niners ensured they’d have a bookend tackle for the long run.
