In a surprising move, the San Francisco 49ers drafted Notre Dame Fighting Irish offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey with their first-round draft pick.
With quarterback Josh Rosen still available, and quarterback-needy teams likely contacting the Niners in an effort to trade up to the ninth overall pick, general manager John Lynch instead opted to draft the offensive lineman.
The Arizona Cardinals traded up for Rosen one pick later.
The 49ers, who have immediate needs at edge rusher, inside linebacker and cornerback, also chose to pass on top prospects at those positions of need in order to add talent at a tackle position that will need to be addressed in the future, but is currently manned by two multi-year starters.
