The San Francisco 49ers are in the process of searching for an offensive coordinator to pair with new head coach Chip Kelly and the team has reportedly reached out to a former NFL and college football head coach. According to the SB Nation, the team has contacted Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin.
This isn't the first time the 49ers have tried to hire Kiffin. They reached out to him about taking over as OC last year as well. Kiffin elected to stay at Alabama and the 49ers ended up hiring Geep Chryst.
Kelly spent time at Alabama this offseason and worked with Kiffin and the Alabama offense. Kiffin hasn't coached in the NFL since a short stay with the Oakland Raiders. He served as head coach at both USC and Tennessee. He stayed with the Vols for one season and upset the fan base with his abrupt departure. He was fired by USC mid-way through the 2013 season. He's served as the Crimson Tide OC since 2014.
With National Signing Day rapidly approaching, Kiffin will likely have to make a decision about joining the 49ers soon. Kiffin has a good (and successful) thing going at Alabama and may elect to stay.
Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo and Eagles QB coach Ryan Day have both been connected with the job. DeFilippo interviewed with the 49ers earlier this offseason and played for Kelly at New Hampshire.
