Tomlinson was the No. 28 overall pick out of Duke in the 2015 NFL Draft. However, he'd been relegated to backup duty because of his on-field struggles. Tomlinson was behind Graham Glasgow at left guard and his trade means Joe Dahl will be the top backup behind Glasgow and free agent addition T.J. Lang.

He could compete for a starting role for the 49ers and their new regime. He started 10 games last year for the Lions, although he only got several of those starts because of injury. Joshua Garnett, a 2016 first round pick, is the current start at LG, but is out with an injury. Zane Beadles and Brandon Fusco are the other notable OGs on the roster.
