San Francisco 49ers star tight end Vernon Davis reportedly took reps at wide receiver at the team's most recent minicamp. In fact, according to Grant Cohn of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, Davis practiced almost exclusively with the receivers.
At surface level, this seems strange to say the least. Davis has established himself as one of the premier tight ends in the game, and Niners offensive coordinator Greg Roman uses him with tremendous creativity and effectiveness. But as NinerNoise.com points out, with the 49ers receiver corps severely depleted, it would be stunning if Davis didn't practice with the wideouts. And what's more, it isn't all that new for him to do so.
Davis is one of the most physically gifted tight ends to ever play, with wide receiver speed in a fullback's body. Too big to be covered adequately by a cornerback and too fast for most linebackers, Davis has been deadly from the slot receiver position in years past, in addition to his tremendous run blocking as a tight end.
