The 49ers have officially picked their next head coach...and he's one of the contenders already in the building. Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula will take over for Jim Harbaugh, and the official announcement is set to come down any minute now.
Tomsula was first hired to coach San Francisco's defensive line in 2007, and he stayed in that role for seven seasons before ascending to the head coaching position. Tomsula briefly stepped in as interim HC after Mike Singletary was fired in 2010, and he was strongly linked with the 49ers head coaching job after Jim Harbaugh departed in late December.
Tomsula is expected to name a new defensive coordinator, with Vic Fangio not expected to stay if not given the head coaching role himself. Harbaugh offensive coordinator Greg Roman has already left to take the same position in Buffalo.
ESPN's Adam Schefter was first to break the news.
