San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith is recovering from minor injuries suffered at a large house party near San Jose, CA. Wounds to his neck and abdomen are likely from a small pocket knife. According the Santa Clara County sherrif's office, police arrived to the 100+ person house party just after 2AM Saturday morning. He supposedly incurred the injuries while trying to break up a fight. He was released from the hospital Sunday afternoon July 1st.
Said general manager Trent Baalke in a statement: "We are in contact with Aldon, and thankful that his injuries were not more serious and that he is recovering comfortably. The 49ers are also in communication with local authorities as they gather information regarding the incident, and will reserve further comment at this time."
According to Sgt. Jose Cardoza “Gunshots were also heard at the scene but no one was able to identify where they were coming from. Amongst the chaos there were a couple gunshot victims in the crowd and a stabbing victim”
Smith was also arrested in January for a DUI while in Miami Florida. Police said Smith's blood-alcohol level showed .194 and .176 after he was arrested at 4:33 a.m. According to the police report, other drivers had to brake abruptly to avoid hitting Smith's car, which was swerving in and out of traffic.
Despite playing purely as a pass rusher, he had consistently played at a high level. Last year he recorded 14 sacks, 2 FF, 1 safety. Along with 2 sacks in the postseason. He has high expectations being picked number 7 overall in the 2011 NFL Draft.
He is set to be one of the starting LBs on what could be the fiercest squad of linebackers in the league in the upcoming season.
