Bowman has recovered from a serious injury before, returning in 2014 after missing the entire 2013 season with a torn ACL and MCL. He led the NFL in tackles last season, and signed a four-year extension with the team this past offseason.
According to the team's website, they will look to Michael Wilhoite, Gerald Hodges, Nick Bellore and Shayne Skov to handle the inside linebacker roles and replace Bowman.
"If NaVorro is out for this week or an extended period of time it’ll be really those four that you will see in there," Chip Kelly said before the extent of the injury was announced. "Bellore, Wilhoite, Hodge, and Skov. Those are the four we’ve got.”
Bowman had 35 tackles with one interception and one forced fumble this season.
