The offseason has reached a crucial point for the San Francisco 49ers. The new league year starts on Thursday, March 9, and the two-day free agency negotiating window leading up to the start of free agency (Thursday at 4:00 pm ET) as just started. During this time, teams may negotiate all aspects of a contract with a free agent but can't finalize the deal until the new year begins. Here are the latest 49ers news & rumors you need to know:
49ers interested in Trevor Siemian
San Francisco is looking to acquire a quarterback have made acquiring Kirk Cousins their Plan A at the position. However, if they are unable to make that trade - and if Tony Romo goes to Denver - they will try to acquire Trevor Siemian from the Broncos, according to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver.
If the Broncos were to acquire Romo, Elway figures to almost instantly receive trade requests for Siemian, starting with the San Francisco 49ers. New 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan communicated during his head coach interview with the Broncos he was impressed with Siemian, who is scheduled to make a ridiculously affordable $615,000 this season and $705,000 in 2018 as part of his rookie contract.
Siemian started 14 games last season and threw for 3,401 yards and 18 touchdowns against 10 interceptions.
Alshon Jeffery a top target?
Another big need for the 49ers is at wide receiver, and Alshon Jeffery has emerged as their top target at that position, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.
NFL free agency is often fool’s gold with the worst teams chasing what’s left of the “best” players and vastly overpaying in some instances. When I spoke to agents about which teams were showing interest in their pending free agents and seemed primed to spend the most, the teams I almost universally heard were the Browns and 49ers.
The Browns would love to land top safety Tony Jefferson and others, while I continue to hear a persistent buzz about the 49ers and receiver Alshon Jeffery.
Jeffery, who the Chicago Bears chose not to use the franchise tag on, caught 52 passes for 821 yards and two touchdowns in 12 games last season.
San Francisco also among those interested in Terrelle Pryor
The Cleveland Browns have said that re-signing wide receiver Terrelle Pryor is their top priority right now, but several other teams are interested in signing him - including the 49ers - according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
Terrelle Pryor is drawing interest from his hometown Steelers, the Giants, 49ers, Titans and Eagles as the free agency two-day negotiating window opens on Tuesday at noon, league sources told cleveland.com.
There are likely other teams that will express interest too.
Over the next two days, Rosenhaus will know exactly what he can get for the 1,000-yard receiver on the open market, and then the Browns will have an opportunity to match or exceed the best deal.
Rosenhaus and Pryor also will weigh the offers to find the right opportunity for him.
Cleveland did not place the franchise tag on Pryor, which would have paid him $15.826 million for the 2017 season. Head of football operations Sashi Brown also said that while the Browns want to re-sign him, they won't "be panicked if he's not" on their roster - indicating they don't want to spend a lot of money on Pryor. With plenty of cap space and a need at the position, the 49ers could be the team to give Pryor the contract he is seeking.
In his first season as a full-time receiver, Pryor caught 77 passes for 1,007 yards and four touchdowns.
