The San Francisco 49ers have fired both head coach Chip Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke. The move comes after a terrible year, in which the 49ers struggled on both sides of the ball. A new head coach will come in as part of a total rebuild, though the franchise will likely hire a general manager before hiring a head coach. Here's all the latest news & rumors you need to know surrounding the 49ers' coaching search:
Full list of candidates
San Francisco's list of head coaching candidates they're considering has emerged, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea:
The 49ers have requested permission to interview New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels for their head-coaching vacancy, according to multiple reports.
McDaniels is believed to be at the top of the 49ers’ wish list to fill the vacancy that was created with the firing of head coach Chip Kelly after the 49ers finished this season with a 2-14 record.
But the 49ers will look to bring in other candidates for the job, including Seattle offensive line coach and former Raiders head coach Tom Cable, Buffalo interim head coach Anthony Lynn, Jacksonville interim coach Doug Marrone and Miami defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.
Josh McDaniels interview set
Of those candidates, the 49ers plan to interview McDaniels first during New England's bye week this weekend, reports Peter Schrager of FOX Sports:
Just said on @gmfb . News: Patriots OC Josh McDaniels will interview with Jacksonville, Los Angeles Rams, and San Francisco this weekend.

McDaniels is one of the most sought-after coaching candidates this offseason, so San Francisco is going to have to move fast if they decide he's their guy. That may come before a GM hiring, but considering he's their favorite, they might not wait for that to happen.
San Francisco also interviewing Anthony Lynn
The other candidate the 49ers have requested to interview is Bills offensive coordinator/interim head coach Anthony Lynn, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network:
The #49ers have requested permission to speak with #Bills OC Anthony Lynn. Curious to see it this speeds up Buffalo’s decisions.

Lynn is expected to get the permanent job in Buffalo, and it remains to be seen if the 49ers are interested enough in him to get into a potential bidding war with the Bills.
