Yesterday, we analyzed what San Francisco's deal with assistant Steve Logan could mean for the team's current OC search. While it was clear that the 49ers were close to hiring Logan, there was no word on what job he'd be taking...so we looked at the available positions and took a look at what the options were. Logan was Jim Tomsula's offensive coordinator with the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe, but his only NFL experience has come in the form of two seasons as Tampa's running backs coach...so it seemed a bit of a stretch that he'd become the 49ers new offensive coordinator.
One of the most likely scenarios, in our eyes, was that Logan would become the new quarterbacks coach, and current QBs coach Geep Chryst would be promoted to OC. Now that we know Logan is set to become quarterbacks coach...well, all eyes are on Chryst.
Chryst has two seasons as an offensive coordinator under his belt - he did double duty as OC and QBs coach with the San Diego Chargers in 1999 and 2000, but his only other coaching jobs have been as a position coach. With the 49ers struggling to land outside OC candidates like Indy's Rob Chudzinksi, it looks like Chryst may have landed the job more or less by default.
