The San Francisco 49ers have plenty of work to do in the 2015 NFL Draft to replenish a defense ravaged by free agency departures and retirements, and now they'll have two extra picks to work with in order to do so.
The 49ers received compensatory selections in the fourth round and the seventh round of the draft on Monday, giving them two picks in the fourth and seventh rounds and one selection in each of the other five rounds.

As Eric Branch of SFGate.com points out, "the compensatory picks, which can’t be traded, are determined based on a team’s net free-agent losses and gains from the previous year. The formula includes salary, playing time and postseason honors. It accounted for the 49ers’ losses of safety Donte Whitner, cornerback Tarell Brown and running back Anthony Dixon and their signing of safety Antoine Bethea last year."
14 teams received compensatory selections this year, with the Seahawks, Broncos and Chiefs all receiving the maximum amount of four.
