The San Francisco 49ers hold the No. 7 overall pick in the NFL Draft after suffering through a very disappointing campaign, but having a high draft pick gives them the opportunity to draft an impact player needed to help turn this team around. You might be surprised not to see Cal QB Jared Goff on this list, but he made our list of prospects the 49ers should avoid in the draft. Here are three players they could target in the first round:
CB Vernon Hargreaves III
Hargreaves was a true shutdown corner during his time at Florida, and is projected to be a top 10 pick because of that ability. Miami's secondary could use an upgrade, and Hargreaves is someone who could come in and immediately upgrade the enitre unit. He has solid size at 5'11" and 200 pounds, but his superb quickness and athleticism - along with his willingness and ability to be a factor in the run game as well - is what sets him apart.
LB Jaylon Smith
Smith's draft position is complicated by a torn MCL and ACL. He would've been top five pick if he was totally healthy, but his injury could cause him to be limited during his rookie season (though he says he won't have to miss any time). Smith is a true hybrid that can play any linebacker position because of his freak athleticism. If he checks out medically, he's worth taking at No. 7. UCLA's Myles Jack is also worth thinking about, but he is also coming a torn ACL.
DB Jalen Ramsey
It's not clear if Ramsey is part of the next generation of bigger corners, or better off at safety. Either way, he's a great fit for the 49ers and the type of versatile player they love. San Francisco's secondary needs a major facelift, and Ramsey could step in right away and make plays at either position. Ramsey is worth a top 5 pick and landing him would be big for the 49ers - if he falls to them.
