The San Francisco 49ers missed out on the playoffs for the first time in four seasons, and now have a new head coach in Jim Tomsula. This team still has championship expectations, but they'll look to improve their roster through free agency. Who should they target?
Cecil Shorts, WR
San Francisco would like to find a consistent target to put alongside Anquan Boldin and help quarterback Colin Kaepernick, but the top free agent wideouts Dez Bryant, Randall Cobb, and Demaryius Thomas are probably out of their price range.
Shorts has put up good numbers in his four years in the league despite being limited by injuries and poor quarterback play in Jacksonville, and is looking for a new start. If the 49ers strike out on him, they could go after Kenny Britt.
Paul Fanaika, OL
Guard Mike Iupati figures to be the only offensive lineman to depart the starting rotation of the 49ers since he's due a top contract in free agency, meaning San Francisco will have to look elsewhere.
Offensive guard Paul Fanaika, a Bay Area native, could be a nice option to bolster the left side of the line. He started a total of 30 games for Arizona over the last two seasons and also made just $780,000 in 2014, so a contract here would not bite the 49ers.
CB Cary Williams
Williams isn’t an elite corner on the free agency market, but he’s in the second tier and would fill a need for the 49ers and their secondary. He has Super Bowl experience from his time with the Ravens, and his physicality would be welcomed.
