CHICAGO — When the Padres and the Chicago Cubs play each other in a day-night doubleheader Wednesday, the on-paper mismatch will cover more than talent.
In Tuesday's game, San Diego's already-tenuous depth absorbed more blows. Rookie right-hander Cesar Vargas, a revelation through his first three starts, didn't make it past four innings. Shortstop Alexei Ramirez exited in the fifth due to what the Padres called cramping in his left hamstring.
That diagnosis at least brought some relief. The Padres (13-20) had arrived in Chicago minus three infield regulars. Third baseman Yangervis Solarte (right hamstring strain), second baseman Cory Spangenberg (left quad strain) and utility player Alexi Amarista (right hamstring strain) all are on the disabled list.
