Justin Upton moved a step closer to returning to the Padres' lineup Thursday, taking swings indoors and playing catch during batting practice. The left fielder, recently sidelined by left oblique tightness, missed his fourth consecutive start, though interim manager Pat Murphy didn't rule out the possibility of a pinch-hitting appearance in the series opener against the Marlins.
