SAN DIEGO -- The jump Melvin Upton Jr. got on his straight steal of home Friday night at Petco Park was perfect. His slide was even better.
With a heads-up play that was equal parts savvy and athleticism, Upton became the first Padre to record a straight steal of home since Everth Cabrera did so in 2012. It gave the Padres a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning of Friday night's game against the Rockies.
Colorado starter Chris Rusin wasn't even in the windup, but he also wasn't paying attention to Upton, who broke for home slightly before Rusin's first move.
