Editor's note: This story originally appeared four years ago on the 30th anniversary of Tony Gwynn's debut.
It is a handshake as much as a hit that Tony Gwynn remembers most vividly from his first game in the major leagues.
Perhaps that is because congratulations came from the man who collected more hits than anyone who ever played the game.
It is the 34th anniversary of Gwynn’s major league debut, July 19, 1982, in a game against the Philadelphia Phillies at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
“I wasn’t nervous or anything,” said Gwynn, whose debut came just 14 months after being drafted in the third round out of San Diego State.
