On this day in 1980, the Padres traded their first major award recipient, 1976 Cy Young Award winner Randy Jones, to the Mets for two marginal players who had performed poorly for New York, and wouldn't fare any better in San Diego. Jones was on the downswing of his career, but he did stick around Queens for two seasons, pitching in 41 games for the far-from-Amazin' Mets.
Of the two players the Padres got in return, only Jose Moreno saw regular-season action in brown, gold, and orange. The outfielder and second baseman had been used primarily as a pinch-hitter in his lone year with the Mets.
