Talking with ... Padres farm director Sam Geaney

By most accounts, the Padres minor league system, under farm director Sam Geaney, has developed into the best and deepest in the game, and the big league team is reaping the benefits early in 2019. Four-fifths of the opening day rotation was drafted inside the last three years, a third starting pitcher turned in a successful big league debut Thursday and the starting shortstop is 20 years old.

Union-Tribune: Is any of this even faster that you could have foreseen?

Geaney: I think so. We’ve always kind of said that these guys are going to show us when they’re ready.
