SAN DIEGO -- Padres outfielder Matt Szczur put a dent in his former club's chances in Monday night's series opener against the Cubs. On the same play, however, former Padre Anthony Rizzo may have put a longer-term dent in the fortunes of his old team.
With one out in the sixth, Szczur made a running catch in center and fired a strike to the plate well ahead of Rizzo, who was attempting to score from third base. Rizzo, who was beaten by several steps, barreled into Padres catcher Austin Hedges on the play, sending Hedges flying backward.
