A momentous home run that helped catapult an organization thirsting for culture into their first World Series enticed the Padres to retire the No. 6 that Steve Garvey wore during his short stay in San Diego.
Now Garvey gets another chance at baseball immortality.
The former Padres and Dodgers first baseman is one of 10 candidates that the Modern Baseball Era committee will consider for induction into baseball’s Hall of Fame.
Former Padres bench coach Ted Simmons — an eight-time all-star as a player — is also on the ballot.
Others up for consideration include Dwight Evans, Tommy John, Don Mattingly, Marvin Miller, Thurman Munson, Dale Murphy, Dave Parker and Lou Whitaker.
