Start of Padres season in jeopardy after state agency recommends ban on large gatherings to counter coronavirus

PEORIA, Ariz. —

The California Department of Public Health suggested late Wednesday that public gatherings of 250 people or more should be postponed or cancelled for at least the rest of March, putting in doubt the opening series for four of the state’s Major League Baseball teams.

The state agency’s recommendation is in an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) and came late on the same night in which the NBA suspended its season and at the end of a day in which it was announced the NCAA basketball tournament would be played without the general public being admitted.
