Alexi Amarista, who could have replaced Spangenberg at second, tweaked his hamstring Tuesday night -- an injury which appears to be minor, but it could line up Weeks for playing time early.
To clear room for Weeks on the 40-man roster, the Padres placed reliever Buddy Baumann on the 60-day DL. Baumann hasn't been able to throw because of tightness in his lower back.
Weeks caught the eye of the organization in Spring Training, after signing a Minor League deal before the season. He batted .340/.407/.585 in Cactus League play, while showcasing his versatility on the field and his speed on the basepaths.
