WASHINGTON -- Padres second baseman Ryan Schimpf has set a franchise rookie record with nine home runs in a single calendar month.
Schimpf sent an 0-1 offering from Nationals reliever Shawn Kelly over the center-field fence with none out in the eighth inning to tie the game, 6-6. Schimpf's homer came one batter after Alex Dickerson hit a solo shot over the right-field wall, which extended the Padres' franchise-record streak of 22 consecutive games with a homer. It also marked the sixth time this season that the Padres have hit back-to-back home runs.
Schimpf's nine homers this month are one better than the eight home runs Jedd Gyorko hit as a rookie with San Diego in August 2013.
