POWAY — A memorial statue of baseball great and Poway resident Tony Gwynn will probably be unveiled by February, under a deal approved this week by the Poway City Council.
The council agreed Tuesday to sign a contract with Texas sculptor Seth Vandable to construct the 9-foot bronze statue, which will depict Gwynn wearing a Padres uniform while holding his young daughter in one arm and waving to a crowd with the other.
Officials have said they don’t expect any tax dollars to be spent on the memorial, which will be erected near the baseball field at Lake Poway.
