One of the beauties of baseball is the coincidences that make a good story seemingly too good to be true.
One such occasion occurred 20 years ago Thursday.
July 18, 1999, was Yogi Berra Day at Yankee Stadium. The Hall of Fame catcher set aside his 14-year feud with owner George Steinbrenner — who had fired Berra as manager just 16 games into the 1985 season — and returned to be honored.
Rather than throw out the first pitch, Berra caught it. And who better to receive it from than Don Larsen, Berra’s batterymate for Larsen’s perfect game against the Dodgers in the 1956 World Series.
