Austin Allen watched Dustin May’s first fastball run just off the plate to start Monday night’s pinch-hit at-bat in the sixth inning. He swung over the top of both a cutter and a curve before the Dodgers rookie’s fourth pitch, another curve, hung up in the zone.
The resulting swing produced a 100-mph drive off his bat at a 26-degree angle, likely more than enough juice to conquer just about any park in the homer-happy Pacific Coast League.
“I thought it was a homer here,” rookie infielder Ty France said. “I thought he got it.”
Allen did, too — at first.
