WASHINGTON — The Padres on Friday announced their signing of Cuban outfield prospect Jorge Ona, a projectable 19-year-old who already has shown impressive power and a propensity for contact.
Ona will receive a $7 million bonus, which would be a club record had the Padres not paid Cuban lefty Adrian Morejon $11 million earlier this month. (Ona and Morejon shared the same trainer, Javier Rodriguez.) And while Ona might not have the upside of the 17-year-old Morejon, the outfielder was highly coveted in his own right.
Ona was ranked the No. 8 international prospect in the 2016 class by MLB.
