Preller doesn’t leave much meat for stew

If Melvin Upton smiled, his face might crumble like an oyster cracker. There are diseases less serious than Melvin, who always has the look of a man wanting to beat the hell out of someone.

But when Padres General Manager/international importer A.J. Preller traded him to Toronto for yet another Latin American wing, a whole lot of fun was removed from the club’s bag. A.J.’s signature dish on the menu now is an uncooked sopa.

Upton had become a joy to watch, playing a tremendous, Gold Glove-caliber left field — his catch-throw-to-first when he subbed in center may have been the greatest double play in club history — and had walk-off magic.
