Pregame: Six-man rotation an option

CINCINNATI — Andrew Cashner’s return after a planned June 28 rehab game might not cost anyone their spot in the rotation.

With the All-Star break approaching quickly and the team needing to govern so many of their starters’ workloads, Padres manager Andy Green said Saturday that they there were discussing employing a six-man rotation through the end of the first half.

In fact, the Padres will remain in their current order even with two off-days next week to give everyone extra rest as, among their current starters, only right-hander Erik Johnson (Tuesday’s starter) has ever thrown more than 160 innings in a season.
